Problem

Automation already matched most volume. The product still presented every line with equal weight, so analysts scrolled through matched records to find the small set of breaks that carried the risk.

When a break was found, resolving it meant comparing two records held in separate tabs and remembering which adjustments needed a second approver.

Approach

  1. 01

    Separated monitoring from resolution

Live monitoring answers is the day healthy. Reconciliation answers what did not match. The break workspace answers what do I do about it. Each surface has one job, and they hand off cleanly.

  2. 02

Put the match confidence in the row

Every reconciliation row carries the ledger line, the statement line, the delta and the system's suggestion - so the analyst reviews a proposal instead of assembling one.

  3. 03

Made resolution a choice between options

Break resolution presents the two records side by side and the concrete options: split match, post adjustment, return to counterparty. Approval requirements are shown before the action, not after.

03

Key UX decisions

  • Value, not count, drives the health view

Reconciliation health is expressed as a share of value auto-matched, rule-assisted and manual, because a single large break matters more than a hundred small ones.

  • Deltas are always signed and aligned

Amount columns use tabular figures and a consistent decimal alignment, with a dash for no delta, so scanning a column is a visual task rather than a reading task.

  • Second-approver rules surfaced inline

The workspace states that a second approver is required next to the primary action, removing a routine cause of rejected adjustments.

  • Saved views over configurable dashboards

Analysts work from a small set of shared, named views instead of building personal dashboards, which keeps handovers between shifts reliable.

Outcome & impact

Analysts start from exceptions rather than from volume, and each break arrives with the comparison and the resolution options already assembled.

The pattern generalised: the paired-record layout and suggestion column became the reusable model for other exception types across the platform.
